Nintendo dropped firmware update 6.2.0 for its Switch console. As often, the only official changelogstates this update improves stability.
General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.
On the scene side, however, Word on the street is that this update breaks Custom Firmware compatibility, for all known CFWs. (That is, of course, for people who are running a CFW and choose to update, a very strange move in my book but who am I to judge.)
Of course, since the Fusee Gelee exploit, we know that all consoles are vulnerable at the hardware level, and as such a firmware update that “breaks” your Custom Firmware has been generally considered as something that can just slow hackers down, not really stop them.
Hacker SciresM, behind the popular CFW framework Atmosphere, states that Nintendo Switch firmware 6.2.0 introduces “huge changes to key generation” (which might explain why it breaks CFW). He also mentions he is looking forward to cracking that code.
As always, if you’re running a Custom Firmware on your Nintendo Switch, give a few days or weeks to figure things out before you choose to update. Also remember to use ChoixDuJourNx or similar tools to ensure updating your firmware doesn’t actually burn any fuse.
