SEGA leaves the door open to Shenmue I & II on Switch

Prior to the Tokyo Game Show last week, a fan poll was held to determine the most wanted SEGA Ages games for Switch. Jet Set Radio topped the list, but right behind it was Shenmue I & II. While both of these titles were just recently re-released on modern platforms, Switch was left out of the equation. Perhaps that could that change in the future.
4Gamer interviewed localization director Hiroji Noguchi and localization producer Eigo Kasahara around TGS. The site brought up the interest in seeing Shenmue on Switch, and neither of them shot down the possibility. In fact, bringing Shenmue to Switch is something Kasahara would like to consider.
Here’s the full exchange:
4Gamer: Speaking of “retro,” at the SEGA Ages event a few days ago there were a lot of people saying that they wanted Shenmue I & II to come to Switch.
Noguchi: The fans have really shown their love for Shenmue – and for that, I really am grateful. Personally, I think it’d be great if you could play Shenmue on the Switch anywhere…
Kasahara: Whether or not we can do something like that in reality, we’re taking the fan’s opinions into consideration. Following up on that might take some time, but it’s definitely something I want to consider.

Tetsuya Nomura wants to continue The World Ends with You

At the TGS, Tetsuya Nomura was asked about the upcoming re-release of the World ends with you for Switch and revealed something interesting.
“This release, 11 years later, is entirely thanks to the dedicated fans of ‘The World Ends With You’. Rather than call this a ‘remaster’, I like to think of this version of the game as a ‘new beginning!’ I will be working hard on future development that will make you glad that you supported this game so passionately for so long.”

Nomura clearly wants to continue this IP, so hopefully the Switch version sells well.
Will you be getting it?

SX OS v2.0 Announcement

Hello friends! Team Xecuter is happy to bring you the official 2.0 release of your beloved SX OS.
SX20
EmuNAND NAND Dumping, Restoring, GPT Repair LayeredFS working on 6.0 Homebrew NSP Compatibility Closing Words Lets start with the major new feature in 2.0: EmuNAND. Those who have a background in the Nintendo 3DS hacking scene know what this is, but let's quickly elaborate for those of you who are new to the game: The Switch uses a NAND Flash storage chip to store all of the system software, as well as your save games and other assets. With EmuNAND we create a shadow copy of this storage from which you can run SX OS. The benefits from doing this are that you keep your SX OS "world" separated from your original firmware. This also means you can keep your switch on an older firmware, while running the latest and greatest firmware inside of your EmuNAND. As we all know, older is better.. when it comes to defeating system security at least. And newer is better when it comes to enjoying the latest content! 😉 Another upside of consolidating your SX OS usage from your original firmware usage is vastly reducing the risk of a network ban. You can run SX OS in EmuNAND, of course with our Stealth Mode enabled, and anything that is littered on the EmuNAND's filesystem is not visible to the switch in Original Firmware mode. One thing to note is that SX OS EmuNAND works a bit differently compared to what some of you might think of as "traditional" EmuNAND where the entire NAND is copied to a separate partition on the MicroSD card. With SX OS EmuNAND your EmuNAND partition lives inside of your regular NAND. The primary reason for this is that occupying 32GB of a MicroSD card is a bit wasteful. The secondary reason is by utilizing the existing flash storage we can guarantee performance and reliability. You can set up EmuNAND by booting into the SX OS boot menu (hold Volume + during boot) and going into the revamped "Options" menu. There you will find a section called EmuNAND which will guide you through the setup. By default SX OS will allocate 15GB for your EmuNAND partition. If you want to use a different size hit the "advanced" button before creating your EmuNAND. SX OS will boot into EmuNAND by default if it finds a valid EmuNAND partition. If you don't want to boot into EmuNAND, there's a button in the SX OS Boot menu which will allow you to continue booting with EmuNAND disabled. As mentioned in the previous section we have revamped our SX OS boot menu's option screen quite a bit. For the tinkerers and advanced users we introduced an easy method of dumping/restoring your NAND flash storage. Another neat addition for people who had an unhappy accident while playing with their NAND is the "GPT Repair" option. This will repair your NAND's partition table if you ever need to. Again, this functionality is for advanced users who know what they're doing only. Please be cautious when using this functionality. With our (early) support for 6.0 we introduced a regression where "LayeredFS" would no longer work. This has been corrected and you can now enjoy your game modifications/hacks again on the latest official firmware. We got word that the community has started distributing homebrew titles as NSP files recently. These NSP files cut some corners in the way they are crafted, but we decided to introduce support to make them usable with SX OS anyway. So you can now enjoy your favorite homebrew titles that comes as installable NSP files and launch them directly from the home screen! Whew, we're sorry for the wall of text. We tried to keep things as concise and easy to understand as possible. SX OS 2.0 is a big and important update, but certainly won't be the last. We know you're all waiting for even more functionality that is in high demand. Rest assured, we work as fast as we can to scrap these items off of the bucket list and bring them to you, the loyal end user, as fast as we can! A lot has happened since the initial release of SX OS a few months ago. This is far from a simple proof of concept custom firmware anymore. With this major update we bring some exciting new functionality to the table. We suggest you grab a beverage of your choice and read on to learn moreEnough chit-chat, you can update to SX OS 2.0 right *now* by using the built-in updater if you are running SX OS 1.9 or higher. Otherwise head to our website and grab a copy! Enjoy!

Custom Home Menu (and Lockscreen/Settings app) Themes are now a thing on the Nintendo Switch thanks to Team Qcean

Without a doubt, many of us like customising their devices and this is one of the reasons why we hack our consoles. Now, Nintendo Switch customisation is becoming a thing thanks to the combined efforts of Team Qcean!

Custom Themes on the Nintendo Switch? How does this work?

Unlike what they did with the 3DS, Nintendo didn’t give the Nintendo Switch much in the area of UI customisation.

Customising your home menu, lock screen and settings app is now possible on the Switch – Image from link below
As a result, you can’t change much of the general look and feel of Qlaunch (home menu) but now, that’s changed thanks to the work of Team Qcean.
Recently, the team has been fiddling around with Qlaunch and a few days ago, they figured out how to change the home menu colours and gradient and were also able to get custom background images up and running.
As a result, they decided to share their progress and some pictures so that we could look at their work.

What’s the current state of Team Qcean’s work?

Currently, Team Qcean have been able to figure out how to get the following working:
  • Custom background colours and images
  • Layout editing so you can move menu items around
  • Text Editing

Themes by community members are already in full swing with themes like this Miku theme for the Settings app by Discord user “『Joker』”
  • Cursor Editing
  • Icon Editing
  • Lockscreen and Settings app colour customisation
As things stand right now, some work still needs to be done as themes don’t work on SX OS, some things are buggy and there might be some legal issues as the custom themes are using Nintendo’s official theme files rather than a custom file format. That being said, a good deal of progress is being made and in the near future, making custom themes for the Switch should be something that ordinary community members could do.

Conclusion

For more information, including instructions on how to make your own themes, and downloads (which may be illegal), simply follow the links below. It is important to note that downloads can only be found in the Discord channel NOT on GBATemp forums due to potential legal issues.

SEGA Ages director on choosing selection of titles and more

Switch owners can begin to enjoy some SEGA classics at home or on the go with the SEGA Ages collection on Switch, starting with two titles released this week: “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Thunder Force IV”. Following this will be steady releases including “Phantasy Star”, “Alex Kidd in Miracle World”, “Gain Ground” and many more.
Last week’s issue of Famitsu has a mini-interview with Rieko Kodama, lead producer and director of SEGA AGES, to offer some insight on upcoming titles. Check out below for our translation.
Kodama is a legendary game developer, notable as one of the first prominent women in Japanese game development. She is particularly famous for her work on the “Phantasy Star” series and the “7thDragon” series.
How did you choose the selection of titles?
Kodama: We started out by looking at what were the most popular titles from our previous release on Nintendo 3DS, “SEGA 3D Classics Collection”. There were many fans that said they wanted to play these versions on the big screen, so I’m glad we can finally fulfill those requests.
Were there any titles in particular that you wanted to be included?
Kodama: Yes, “Thunder Force AC” and “Columns II” because it’s been over 20 years since they were ported to the SEGA Saturn, and they haven’t seen a new release since. We released “Thunder Force III” and “Columns” on Nintendo 3DS with “Sega 3D Reprint Archives 3” and they were really well received, so we chose these updated games in each series to show how this collection is about moving forward. We specifically chose these titles with Nintendo Switch in mind, and we’ve included online play, as well. I really hope fans enjoy the online modes!
What new additions are in each title?
Kodama: In “Out Run”, we’ve included the new songs from the Nintendo 3DS version and added in an altered arrangement of some of the most popular songs. There are some songs fans absolutely expect with this title, and I dare say it feels very much like the arcade days. As for the other titles, we’ll reveal more details as they come about.
Hit us with some hot takes on the upcoming releases!
Kodama: We know all of you out there expect top-quality ports and exciting new features for these games, so I can assure you we’re devoted to meeting those expectations! “Thunder Force IV” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” in September are just the beginning – we’ve got “Phantasy Star” and lots of other great games coming your way. We’ll also be holding a stage event at this year’s Tokyo Game Show on September 22, so don’t miss it!
Out Run: Nintendo Switch Version
  • Features new widescreen mode and 60fps visuals.
  • Contains all content from the Nintendo 3DS version, including the ability to tune-up your car.
  • Includes all music tracks from the original and Nintendo 3DS release. Three of the most popular tracks have a new arrangement, as well.
  • Includes gyro controls to imitate steering wheel motions.
Thunder Force AC: Nintendo Switch Version
  • Supports online leaderboards for every mode.
  • Includes an option (“Kids Mode”) that has an easier difficulty and a rapid fire ability so new players can enjoy this as their first shooter.
  • Includes an extra stage that was originally exclusive to the arcade version.
Phantasy Star: Nintendo Switch Version
  • Includes a brand-new enemy bestiary.
  • Includes an auto-mapping feature.

NIS talks Switch support, says Disgaea 6 is “very early” in development, more

At the Tokyo Game Show, Game Informer caught up with Nippon Ichi president Sohei Niikawa. Niikawa had a few interesting things to say about supporting Switch and more.
During the interview, Niikawa mentioned that NIS “wants to continue to release more and more games” on Switch. He said the following about releasing games on the platform:
“I definitely feel the Nintendo Switch is a very appealing platform. And what I mean by appealing is that at home you can play it on your TV and then you can pick it up and play it on the go as well. It’s a platform that’s perfect for people all over the world, that meets everyone’s needs. And as a company, Nippon Ichi Software wants to continue to release more and more games on it. What really contributed to that decision was Disgaea 5’s success on the platform. We were actually surprised, in terms of sales for North America and Europe, it did much better than our expectations.”
Niikawa also spoke about Disgaea, including Disgaea 6:
“Disgaea is a title that was born in Japan, but I feel it’s a title that has been more well-received overseas. As for why that is, I have no clue, but because that is the case we’re going to make more and more Disgaeas and release them into the world.”
“Yes, it’s (Disgaea 6) been in the works from the preparatory stages from a while back, but in terms in when it will be released and what’s actually going to be in it content-wise, that’s still TBD. It’s still very early.”
Last but not least, Niikawa reiterated that Switch is one of the platforms NIS will continue to target, and also wants to bring attention to Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk:
“As Nippon Ichi Software, we’d like to continue in the consumer sphere, which is what we consider consoles and handhelds – not mobile, essentially. Specifically, [we’re targeting] the PlayStation 4, Switch, and Steam. That’s the general strategy going forward.
… This goes back to earlier in the conversation, but again, just going forward [our goal is] making Disgaea 6 up to the level that everyone is expecting. Another series we’re definitely looking to bring a lot of attention to, which just came out in North America, is Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk. This is a game we put a lot of time and energy into, to strictly call it by its genre type it’d be a [dungeon crawler]. To compare it to Disgaea, which is a strategy/RPG, the things [Disgaea] did were pretty revolutionary and pretty crazy. It kind of turned SRPGs on their heads. I feel the say way about some of the systems in Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk.”
