Nippon Ichi talks Disgaea 5 Complete’s success on Switch, positive about Nintendo, reconfirms Disgaea 6

Japanese website 4Gamer published a new interview today looking back on the history of Disgaea. There are a couple of interesting excerpts in particular, especially when it comes to Nintendo.
First, Nippon Ichi president Sohei Niikawa and Disgaea director Takehisa Matsuda shared the following about Disgaea 5 Complete’s success on Switch and getting it ready in time for the system’s launch:
It’s impressive that you were able to release the Switch version of Disgaea as a launch title for the console!
Niikawa: The Switch version sold incredibly well, truth be told. Domestically, the game sold about half as well as the PS4 version, but in North America and Europe sales exceeded 200,000 units! There was a hitch, though: in Japan, the games have previously sold well as handheld titles, but overseas they sell primarily for home consoles. The Switch was the solution to that issue, and was probably related to the game selling well, I think. Looking back on it, it was a good thing the game’s release lined up with the console’s launch.
You must’ve concentrated all of your efforts into including the title in the console’s launch lineup – there weren’t that many other games at the time.
Niikawa: It was because Nintendo released information about the Switch fairly early that we were sure we could overcome that aforementioned “hitch.” We were sure we’d be met with success if a small company like us were to release one of our games as a launch title on one of Nintendo’s consoles. We worked hard to make sure the game was ready in time!
Matsuda: It seemed like an impossible feat given that there was only six months until the game’s development deadline – but we gathered up the best of the best of our team and made it happen.
Matsuda and Niikawa also spoke quite highly of Nintendo on the whole:
So, the Switch version of Disgaea 5 was developed over the course of six months… Was it because it was easy to develop?
Matsuda: Right, Nintendo was incredibly attentive to us before release; responses were quick, and their technical support was quite extensive – I was even asked to come to Gifu just for a technical lecture!
Niikawa: Nintendo has been very cordial with us even since the days of the Nintendo DS; if we asked, they’d give us all kinds of advice concerning things like operability/user-friendliness and the like. Even though that kind of advice is commonplace, I can personally attest to how great Nintendo is! That being said, though, I don’t want people to misunderstand what I’m saying and think we only went to Nintendo for support – Sony too, of course, was incredibly helpful in a variety of ways.
Other than that, Disgaea 6 was once again confirmed in the interview. No news on when it will be available and on which platforms, however.

SWITCH ALREADY OVER 1,000 GAMES STRONG, SET TO OVERTAKE 3DS TOTAL SOFTWARE RELEASES

For anyone keeping up with the Switch eShop, this should not be a surprise. The Switch is currently sitting at 1,065 pieces of software available, which is absolutely insane when you consider the short amount of time the console has been available. That number beats out the Wii U's 1,041 releases over its entire lifespan. The next milestone to beat is 1,254, which is the current number of 3DS titles available.

BETHESDA SAYS THEIR RELEASES ON SWITCH HAVE BEEN 'HUGELY POPULAR' 25

Wondering if Bethesda has been happy with their Switch releases thus far? According to Bethesda's Pete Hines, the company is very happy with how they've been received.
“It was hugely popular – all of the stuff that we did. I think folks enjoyed and appreciated – and we wanted to make sure to say right up front that this is a title (DOOM Eternal) we want to bring to Switch, and we think it’s gonna be another awesome experience.”

BLADE STRANGERS WILL HAVE MULTIPLE ALTERNATE COVERS

Nicalis has gone alternate cover crazy with Blade Strangers. As you can see in the tweet above, this isn't a simple case of flipping a cover and having a different piece of art. It looks like multiple designs will be out there. We're not quite sure how this works, but we imagine it'll be luck of the draw. Each physical copy will have one specific design on the inside cover, so hopefully you get the one you want!

Here are the details, via Nintendo:
Changes and New Features
  • Added functionality to receive Corvin, the third and final round of rare blades from the Expansion Pass.
    • A core crystal is available that will guarantee bonding with Corvin. Corvin possess the following characteristics:
      • Weapon type: Uchigatana
      • Element: Light
      • Role: Defense
    • Drivers bonded with Corvin become able to use an art with the reaction “Smash.”
  • Added functionality to the Expansion Pass to receive new challenges for the “Challenge Battle: Nopondemonium” called “Otherworldly Fighter” and “Poisoned Paradise.”
    • “Otherworldly Fighter” features a battle against Elma, from the game Xenoblade Chronicles X. Clearing this challenge will allow Elma to join your party as a blade.
    • Pressing the R and Minus buttons at the same time when all three bars of Elma’s party gauge are full will consume all three bars and engage her Overdrive ability.
    • While Overdrive is active, a counter is applied to all attack arts and specials that hit. As the counter goes up, the effect of the following three bonuses increases: damage boost, an Arts recharge boost from auto-attacks, and a decrease in enemy resistance to reactions and combos.
    • Add this challenge by selecting the following options from the main menu: Expansion Pass, Gift from Zuo 3, Nopon Summons, Pt. 2. The challenge is available from Chapter 6 onward.
  • “Flawless Noponstone” has been added as an item available from treasure chests in the “Challenge Battle: Nopondemonium” of the Expansion Pass.

    • Some of these items will slightly alter character outfits. Included in these items are “swimsuits” that will aid in completing the challenge “Poisoned Paradise.”
    • Certain items for Nia and Zeke will become available from Chapter 8 onward. (These items will be available from the start when playing New Game Plus.)
    • Mòrag’s swimsuit may cause her hairstyle to change in certain event scenes.
  • A Pouch Item Emporium and Noponstone exchanger have also been added to the “Challenge Battle: Nopondemonium” section of the Expansion Pass.
    • Noponstones can be exchanged for Flawless Noponstones using the Noponstone exchanger.
  • The track “Uncontrollable” from Xenoblade Chronicles X has been added to the options available when choosing which music will play during battles with unique monsters via the “Special BGM” selection.
    • To listen to the Special BGM tracks, the blade Elma, available via the Expansion Pass, must already be added to the party.
    • When Elma and either Shulk or Fiora are in the party, the BGM for the blade engaged with the player character will be given priority.
    • When Elma and Shulk or Fiora are of the same priority, the BGM that plays will be selected at random.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is available now for Switch.

Daemon X Machina Gamescom 2018 gameplay

Marvelous debuted new gameplay footage of Daemon X Machina during Nintendo’s Gamescom 2018 live stream.
Here is an overview of all the new information discussed during the gameplay demo, via ResetEra user LordKano:
  • You can create an avatar named Outer.
  • Mechs are called Arsenal.
  • You can grab weapons from defeated enemies to add to your Arsenal, adapting fighting style while in-mission.
  • In the story, the moon has crashed down and mankind is in a difficult situation. Due to that, a new kind of energy called Femto energy was created and is having various effects on the world. Artificial Intelligence that was previously used by mankind has been affected by that energy and they are now rebelling against humanity.
  • The player will get inside an Arsenal and fight against that AI in behalf of humanity.
  • The LAB in the hangar is used to personalize and upgrade (movement speed, jumping ability, new skills, etc.) your Outer. Those enhancements carries over to the Arsenal.
  • Outers are not just normal human beings, they have been affected by Femto energy and are on the level of a super human, and have been driven off from normal society.
  • You pick up missions at the hangar.
  • The mission they play during the Gamescom 2018 demo has them playing on-foot at first, because they need to infiltrate an enemy base to steal an Arsenal.
  • You can fight without your mech, using swords and the link.
  • Enemy mechs are faster, stronger, and smarter than the normal tanks you fight.
  • All cutscenes will be dubbed in the final release.
  • When you play game in multiplayer, hangar will serve as a hub for all the players. Up to four players, each with their mech, can play together in both online and local multiplayer. You can compensate for missing players with CPU (one friend and two CPUs, for example). One player can attract the boss while the others shoot him down.
  • In the Gamescom 2018 demo mission, the boss left a huge laser beam. You can shoot him with that, but you can also keep it, finish the mission then take it back to the hangar so the R&D team will work to create a miniaturized version for your Arsenal.
  • There’s a countdown after you’ve beaten the boss, and it is tied to a “pretty unique multiplayer feature that no game has ever done before, but we’re not going to talk about it until a later date”.
  • The last mission shown this time is an extermination mission taking place in an in-door environment, limiting player movements. A very pivotal character for the story appears at the end of that mission.
  • You can change your weapon loadout in real-time, but you need to have that equipped beforehand.
  • Femto energy is a resource that you have to manage. Some weapons (like the sword used in the demo) uses that energy. Femto energy can be thought like a MP bar in RPGs.
Daemon X Machina is due out for Switch in 2019.

Switch button icons found in the PC version of Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

Here's a bit of an odd one, and we're not quite sure what it means. People have been picking through the files found in Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered, and a rather interesting discovery was made.

The above compilation image was found, which shows off Switch Joy-Con buttons. Why on earth would this be included in the game's data? Could the game be making its way to Switch? Was the port planned at some point, and then cancelled? I guess we'll just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best!

FORTNITE UPDATE VERSION 5.30 IMPROVES PERFORMANCE ON NINTENDO SWITCH

Epic Games has released a new software update for Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, bringing changes to the free-to-play battle royale game to version 5.30 on the portable home console.
This has seen the developer implement performance improvements, whether that be addressing “very long hitches” caused by the Replay System in long games or optimising Outfits loading early on in the game.
On the portable home console specifically, you should see improved building streaming performance that will see them load in more quickly while skydiving, while load times have generally been improved.
Those that have enjoyed using motion controls will also be glad to hear that “smoothing” has been added, that will, hopefully, make that option better.
Epic Games has broken down the extensive update, which has also added the new Rift-to-Go item, tweaked Pump Shotgun equip time changes, introduced the new Score Royale Limited Time Mode, and more.

BULLET-HELL SHOOT ‘EM UP SHIKHONDO: SOUL EATER OUT ON NINTENDO SWITCH NEXT WEEK

It’s down to you to destroy the pestilent invaders and free the captured souls from eternal torment. With Arcade, Hardcore and, for the first time, Local Co-op modes, you can team up with a friend to save the world.
Shikhondo: Soul Eater will release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on August 30th, with a 10 percent discount available at launch.

Rumour: Dark Souls II Port In Development For Nintendo Switch

The rumour mill whirs once more to suggest that Bandai Namco Entertainment is hard at work porting Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin to Nintendo Switch.
That comes from LeakyPandy who, citing a source that works at the publisher, explain that work has already begun on the port, and that their experience with Dark Souls Remastered is “being used as a springboard to maximise efficiency.”
They add that there is “no word on Dark Souls III” at this point in time, although that would understandably require much more work seeing as it was only released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, compared to the previous games that were originally launched on last-gen consoles.
LeakyPandy’s source has also explained that Dark Souls Remastered was released earlier on other platforms in an effort to cover for Code Vein in their release schedule, after the action role-playing game suffered a delay into 2019.
With the Nintendo Switch port the last to be greenlit, it needed more development time before it was ready for release which is why those wanting to buy it on the portable home console have had to wait longer.
Bandai Namco Entertainment also doesn’t believe that the Dark Souls Trilogy, announced for other platforms this week to coincide with Gamescom 2018, will have an impact on the first game’s launch on the console.
Looking to maximise the brand’s presence at retail by releasing them on the same date, it’s seen more as a “repackaging of existing products” rather than something that will as directly compete for consumer attention.
Dark Souls Remastered will release for Nintendo Switch worldwide on October 19th.

Team Sonic Racing reveals first Story Mode details, new character Dodonpa

In this week’s issue of Famitsu, Team Sonic Racing has a two-page article. The main highlight is the reveal of first Story Mode details, including a look at new character Dodonpa. Producer Takashi Iizuka also provides some insight.
Here’s the full translation:
You’ve Been Invited to Race with Sonic and Friends!
Team Sonic Racing producer Takashi Iizuka introduces the game’s Story Mode, in which you can enjoy Sonic & co.’s adventure!
Experience the Adventure as a Team
In “Team Adventure” Mode, you’ll play through an original story centered around characters from the Sonic Universe. To progress through Team Adventure Mode, the player will have to clear various stages such as the last-man-standing “Survival Race,” and the “Ring Challenge,” in which players will race to collect rings. Progressing through the story will also unlock new playable characters and customizable parts for the player’s vehicle!
Producer’s Comment: What Kind of Mode Is It?
Team Adventure Mode is a simple story mode in which you progress the story through racing. The world map is separated into chapters, and by clearing Challenge Missions such as Survival Race, Ring Challenge, Grand Prix, and regular Team Races one by one, you can progress through the story. You can change the difficulty level, too, so it’s perfectly suited for beginners to practice as well!
A New Team Reveals Itself: Team Rose!
A trio whose cuteness is only matched by their cars! Big the Cat makes a long-awaited reappearance in the Froggy-mobile! (with a fishing rod attached to the back)
Members:
Technique Type: Chao, Speed Type: Amy, Power Type: Big the Cat
Mysteries Abound!
Producer’s Comment: How Much Content is There?
I can’t really say exactly how much content there is, but I think it’ll take a bit of time to reach the ending. Even after reaching the ending, though, there are special clear conditions for each stage’s challenge. In each stage there are a set number of stars the player can collect by satisfying those conditions – I’d imagine that completely clearing every stage might take a while!
Dodonpa Appears on the Scene!
Producer’s Comment: Who is this Dodonpa?
Dodonpa is a central character in the game’s story; he’s the mysterious sponsor behind the Grand Prix. At first glance, he appears to be a funny-looking, chubby tanuki riding around in what looks like the Egg Mobile! He sent letters inviting Sonic and the others to his Grand Prix hoping to have them on as racers, but his intentions are an absolute mystery. Dodonpa seems like nothing more than a gentle, chatty person – but could that be a façade masking his true personality… I hope you’re looking forward to finding out!
A New Team Reveals Itself: Team Vector!
Drawn in by the promise of a large sum of prize money, Vector decided to participate after inviting along his two teammates. Silver’s car’s futuristic aesthetic is pretty awesome-looking!
Technical Type: Silver, Speed Type: Blaze, Power Type: Vector
