Wolfenstein II Switch technical analysis

With some major help from Panic Button, Wolfenstein II released on Switch yesterday. Digital Foundry has taken a closer look at the port from a technical perspective.
Arguably what’s most important is the content. No sacrifices were made here, as every level from other versions of Wolfenstein II are present on Switch. All sequences are presented in full. Some tricks were implemented though, like placing a wall in a certain area of the game – likely to reduce load when looking back at the stage.
Similar to Doom, Wolfenstein II makes use of dynamic resolution which adjusts pixel count based on load. It seems that the highest is 720p, but it can drop to as low as 640×360 when docked. In portable mode, you’ll often come across 768×432 and 640×360 pixel counts. Digital Foundry says it’s comparable to Doom, though is often closer to the lower end. The image on screen can sometimes look a bit blurry.
Wolfenstein II is just 22GB on Switch. In comparison, other platforms more than double that size. Panic Button managed to significantly reduce the size with some changes, such as a reduction in video quality and asset quality like textures. It’s worth noting here that geometry and particles are very similar to other versions of the game.
On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Wolfenstein II runs at 60 frames per second, but only the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X can maintain that throughout. Panic Button naturally decided drops to 30 FPS. The good news? There really aren’t any major dips that you’ll come across aside from a few specific areas, and the frame rate seems to be steadier than Doom. The one downside is that the bonus game Wolfenstein 3D runs half as fast on Switch.
Digital Foundry has much more on Wolfenstein II for Switch below.

Mario Tennis Aces update out now (version 1.1.1), patch notes

The update for Mario Tennis Aces announced earlier this week is now live. Version 1.1.1 has begun distribution for all players.
Today’s update implements the “Rating” feature that will be going live on July 1. Other changes have been implemented as well.
The full patch notes are as follows:
  • Changes to Online Tournaments
    • The “Rating” feature will be added to the game on July 1, 2018. Ratings scores will start at 2,000 and go up after scoring points and go down when losing points in matches. It is a score that shows how strong the player is. (The in-game ranking board will continue to be based on Total Points.)
    • In cases where there is a disconnection during a match, ratings will go up or down based on the score in that match at that time.
    • When there is great discrepancy between players in ability, a player’s rating may not go up even if they win.
  • Changes to missions in Adventure mode
    • Forest Practice Court: We have adjusted how often the opponent uses Zone Shots.
    • Forest Edge: We have adjusted how quickly the opponent responds to shots.
    • Reflection Room: We have adjusted how much Energy is refilled.
    • Royal Chamber: We have adjusted how much Energy is refilled.
  • Other changes
    • Online Tournament: We have addressed an issue of settings not aligning with Options settings when starting a match.
    • Online Tournament: We have addressed an issue of the game freezing when pressing certain buttons after there is a communication error.
    • There will be further adjustments to game balance in matches and character performance.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: hackers discover customizable difficulty options

As part of its Season Pass, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has been receiving a variety of DLC all year, culminating with the release of the story DLC Torna: The Golden Country on September 14th. Dataminers, similarly, have also been at it all year and discovered some DLC features before they were officially announced. This has happened again today as hackers have found customizable difficulty options, which will presumably be added to the game at some point in the feature.
As you can see in the image above, these difficulty sliders allow you to customize the game’s challenge to a great degree, ranging from enemy and party damage and party gauge gain to the chain attack damage multiplier and much more.
Of course, as is always the case with datamining, keep in mind that this hasn’t been officially announced yet and might very well change till its official release, or it might even not be released at all.

ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove launches this fall, no longer published by Adult Swim Games

ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove will launch for consoles and PC this fall, developer HumaNature Studios announced.
A closed beta for ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove will launch “within the next couple of weeks” to Kickstarter early-access backers. HumaNature Studios also mentioned that “the Switch version of the game is just about ready to be submitted for certification by Nintendo, and the other console versions are not too far behind.”
Additionally, HumaNature Studios announced that ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove will no longer be published by Adult Swim Games, and will instead be self-published.
“Adult Swim Games has some other big titles they plan to launch this summer so when Back in the Groove pushed back, we both agreed that it made sense for them to hand us the reigns, rather than taking a chance on this getting pushed back any more,” HumaNature Studios founder Greg Johnson said in a press release.

Three minutes of Blazing Chrome gameplay

Publisher The Arcade Crew and developer Joymasher has released a three-minute gameplay preview video of Blazing Chrome, the upcoming side-scrolling action game inspired by titles like Contra and Metal Slug
Here is an overview of teh footage, via The Arcade Crew:
The gorgeous, eye-popping new footage presents the second level of the game, where heroes Mavra and Doyle take on a variety of unique and oppressive enemies like the hovering and damage-dealing Thunderbird and the dangerous bike-Reapers as the heroic duo whiz to glory in their war against militant AI supercomputers. Combining explosive action with a variety of powerful and distinctive weaponry, Blazing Chrome harkens to the golden age of action platformers but harnesses modern-day controls and deep gameplay mechanics.
And here is an overview of the game:
In Blazing Chrome, an oppressive regime of computers rule the Earth while humans are expendable, lacking power, prestige or status among their machine overlords. When a small group of rebels decide to overthrow their oppressors, it results in heavy casualties and a ton of lock-and-load fast-paced action where scrapping robots and blazing chrome with your powerful weapons is the only thing standing between you and your freedom. Heroes can choose to play as Mavra, a super badass human resistance soldier, or Doyle, the equally groovy and deadly insurgent robot. Either choice will lead you down a path of resistance, culminating in a hellfire of bullets and a revolution that will decide the fate of humanity.
Blazing Chrome will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Nintendo Switch: the race to reverse engineer Team Xecuter’s piracy CFW

The Nintendo Switch has been hacked wide open for a few months, but, somewhat surprisingly, options to actually pirate games have not massively surfaced yet.
That was, until Team Xecuter released their “SX” Custom Firmware a few days ago: allegedly, the hacking team’s CFW makes it very easy to load pirated Switch games, which are already widely available on the usual warez and torrent sites.

SX CFW seems to be the easier solution to pirate Nintendo Switch games currently

Although some users of SX have complained that not all games work (a list on Reddit, at the time of writing, actually has yet to name a single backup game that accepts to load on SX OS), according to many the CFW delivers on its promise to be an easy solution for pirates.
This is not to say “open source” solutions don’t exist for piracy on the Nintendo Switch. A thread on GBATemp has been going on for about a week where a few tinkerers are leveraging some of the existing open source hacking tools in order to run backups. The technique consists in tricking the Nintendo switch by hijacking a game for which a proper license is owned, and redirecting it to load a “backup” of a different game.
But given the 40+ pages (and growing) length of the thread discussing “open source” backup loading on the Switch, and with many people complaining the technique is too complex, it seems Team Xecuter’s solution is a much easier option so far for pirates.

A Race to reverse engineer SX CFW

Multiple hackers have shared scripts and tools to help with reverse engineering Team Xecuter’s custom firmware. But not everyone has the same goals: some hackers have already called out that they don’t want Team Xecuter to profit from piracy and might be willing to get the thing reverse engineered in order to kill their business, while others are probably looking to replicate the backup loading functionality from their custom firwmare.
A few veteran hackers from the Switch scene have shared a few tools to help those who want to reverse engineer the code from Team Xecuter. Naehrwert for example has shared a script to unpack the custom firmware, and that script was later updated by Hexkyz for version 1.1 of Team Xecuter’s software. There has also been a stream of announcement from multiple people claiming they were close to decrypting the custom firmware. None of these seem to have led to anything concrete (a public release) yet.

The issues with SX CFW

A few people have warned against using the SX custom firmware. An early version of their custom firmware has been reported to burn the fuses on the console in some cases, which is an irreversible change. Although Team Xecuter state they have now fixed the issue, this confirms once again that running unverified hacks on your console can lead to bad outcomes.
This is not the only concern with the proprietary piracy CFW. Others are concerned that the requirement to activate the pirate OS online puts some of their information at risk. It is difficult to say for sure that some of the users information doesn’t end up in the hands of Team Xecuter, or in Nintendo’s, intentionally or not. With clear warnings from SciresM about the risks of playing pirated Switch games online, some users of SX are probably playing a dangerous game.
Despite all the problems surrounding the SX release, and the fact that open source solutions have been around to hack the Switch for a while now, it seems that the appeal of piracy is a very strong one: multiple resellers of the SX OS are apparently having a hard time keeping up with order volumes, and prospective buyers having to wait longer than expected to get their license code for SX OS.

NX-Shell Beta 3 released – Touchscreen support, an audio player, an OSK for entering names and more!

A good file manager is a utility that all hacked devices should have and thanks to Joel16’s efforts, the Nintendo Switch’s one is seeing great progress! The latest NX-Shell release, Beta 3, brings along many essential features, such as touchscreen support, which will surely please everybody using it.

What is NX-Shell?

Similar to other software with ‘Shell’ in its name like VitaShell, NX-Shell is a file manager for hacked Nintendo Switch devices by Joel16. As of right now, it only lets you access the SD card (i.e no access to system partitions just yet) and has the following features:

Thanks to NX-Shell Beta 3, you can now easily listen to your music on your Switch as Nintendo decided NOT to include a built-in audio player…
  • A Cyanogenmod/LineageOS-esque theme which is present in Joel16’s other work such as 3DShell and CyanogenPSP
  • Dark mode which is great if using it in the dark
  • The ability to copy/move/paste and rename files and folders
  • A picture viewer with support for PNG, JPG, BMP and GIF images
  • An audio player with support for MP3, WAV and OGG formats among others – added in this release
  • Many other features such as a ZIP extractor and the ability to sort files and folders

What got updated/added in NX-Shell Beta 3?

NX-Shell Beta 3 brings along:
  • Touchscreen support by StevenMattera.
    • This is a great addition since NX-Shell UI’s has an Android-esque feeling which of course implies the presence of a touchscreen
  • An audio player that supports MP3, OGG, WAV, MIDI  (reported to be not working), FLAC and MOD formats.
    • Of course, it supports pause/play functionality but you can only go between files via next/previous when listening to MP3 files.
  • An on-screen keyboard, based on the stock Android 5.0+ one, that enables you to create new folders and rename files as both actions require some type of text input; something that was not possible before this release.

Now, NX-Shell features an on-screen keyboard so that you can rename stuff and create new folders directly on your Switch!
  • The right/left d-pad buttons can now be used to skip to the beginning or end of a directory.
  • Some bugs were fixed including one which stopped NX-Shell from working properly when opening empty directories
As demonstrated by the above, this update is pretty substantial and it’s strongly advised to install it whenever you have time.

Conclusion

In order to get NX-Shell Beta 3, simply follow the link below and grab the NRO file to install on your Nintendo Switch. If you encounter any bugs/issues, report them to Joel16 via the GitHub or GBATemp links below.
